Deck Refresh Progress, #1room30days: How to Update and Add Privacy to A Basic Old Picket Fence
Hi Friends, I have not done well at documenting my #1room30days deck refresh process thus far, so I'm going to try to play catch up in the next few posts. I chose my deck for this challenge because since we've become a family of 6, we spend much more time at home . . . Quite honestly, the hassle of getting 6 people ready and out the door is far too great, which is why I chose to make our outdoor space more comfortable and livable, almost like a destination---a place we want to be. Today I am going to show you how I added privacy panels to our basic picket fence to make our deck feel a bit more secluded. I previously explained, in my initial post , how the homes on our street are very closely situated, hence the need for a little extra privacy.
Hey Friends! I've joined Alaya from Behind the Big Green Door again for the next round of Project #1Room30Days. This round, I'm focusing on our deck that we built about 5 years ago. I spoke a little in this post about how we are trying to make our deck comfortable this summer for our family, and how we aren't exactly the outdoorsy type, but this year we'd like to change that. This post contains some affiliate links, which means if you make a purchase using this link, I will receive a small commission from the sale.
BEHR Premium DeckOver 1-gal. #SC-102 Slate (Grey) Wood and Concrete Coating
It left my deck with a nice smooth finish, and I didn't have to worry about the kids getting hurt from splintered wood!
We went ahead and bought a new patio dining set last year as well. It's a pretty basic set, but serves our needs well.

Problem Areas:
First off, I need to decrapify! My hubby gets me all kinds of fun things to play around with in my decor, but when all of these "fun" things are mixed together it can look like a complete hot mess (see pic above).
I would like to create a border around the deck to plant shrubs, etc, and encourage people to use the step on the side of the deck rather than jumping off anywhere. (This has already been started in this pic).
Privacy: On the left of our home our neighbors are in very close proximity, and just past their home, is a church, which unfortunately, is visible from our yard, so we have to look at the unsightly air conditioning vents while we are trying to enjoy each other's company. Ideally, I would really like to extend the deck by about 4 feet, but I have yet to convince my hubby. I would like to utilize the deck to it's full capacity so more seating would be nice, as well as a place to serve food/beverages on.
As usual, this project will be on a budget and I will be utilizing lots of items that I have on hand. So let's see my to do list, shall we?
TO DO:
- Use Behr Deckover, to touch up spots on the deck that peeled up.
- Add privacy
- Incorporate some fun, fresh colors through pillows and cushions
- Build a bench for additional seating in far corner
- Add a place to store outdoor items which can double as a buffet for entertaining.
- String lights---because no deck/patio is complete now-a-days without string lights!
- Get a new brighter umbrella
- Landscaping
- Possibly extend deck

Well, that's about it! I will be back to update you on progress soon. And hopefully my space will come out half as decent as these!
