Project #1Room30Days: Deck Refresh Plans and Outdoor Inspiration I’m Crushing On

Hey Friends!  I’ve joined Alaya from Behind the Big Green Door again for the next round of Project #1Room30Days.  This round, I’m focusing on our deck that we built about 5 years ago.  I spoke a little in this post about how we are trying to make our deck comfortable this summer for our family, and how we aren’t exactly the outdoorsy type, but this year we’d like to change that.  This post contains some affiliate links, which means if you make a purchase using this link, I will receive a small commission from the sale.

First I wanted to give you an idea of the space.  It’s a small deck, just a little platform deck that we built in a day! (some 5 years ago)  Looking back, I wish we would have made it about 4 feet wider, so that it would extend to where the ac unit is (you can see below) This deck really functions as our dining/entertaining area, but tends to be a bit small when we have company over.

We’ve been slowly making progress back here, over the years.  Last summer, I used Behr Deckover in Slate to revitalize the deck boards as they began to show signs of weathering.

BEHR Premium DeckOver 1-gal. #SC-102 Slate (Grey) Wood and Concrete Coating (Affiliate link) is truly amazing!  Look how well it filled the cracks!

It left my deck with a nice smooth finish, and I didn’t have to worry about the kids getting hurt from splintered wood!

We went ahead and bought a new patio dining set last year as well.  It’s a pretty basic set, but serves our needs well.

We’ve already given the fence a fresh coat of paint this spring, so I can check that off of my list and this is what the deck looked like right before we painted the fences, (don’t judge).

Problem Areas:

First off, I need to decrapify!  My hubby gets me all kinds of fun things to play around with in my decor, but when all of these “fun” things are mixed together it can look like a complete hot mess (see pic above).

I would like to create a border around the deck to plant shrubs, etc, and encourage people to use the step on the side of the deck rather than jumping off anywhere.  (This has already been started in this pic).

Privacy:  On the left of our home our neighbors are in very close proximity, and just past their home, is a church, which unfortunately, is visible from our yard, so we have to look at the unsightly air conditioning vents while we are trying to enjoy each other’s company.  Ideally, I would really like to extend the deck by about 4 feet, but I have yet to convince my hubby.  I would like to utilize the deck to it’s full capacity so more seating would be nice, as well as a place to serve food/beverages on.

As usual, this project will be on a budget and I will be utilizing lots of items that I have on hand.  So let’s see my to do list, shall we?

TO DO:

  • Use Behr Deckover, to touch up spots on the deck that peeled up.
  • Add privacy
  • Incorporate some fun, fresh colors through pillows and cushions
  • Build a bench for additional seating in far corner
  • Add a place to store outdoor items which can double as a buffet for entertaining.
  • String lights—because no deck/patio is complete now-a-days without string lights!
  • Get a new brighter umbrella
  • Landscaping
  • Possibly extend deck
