I have partnered with Raymour and Flanigan and received product in exchange for this post. All expressed opinions are 100% my own.
The day has come! I’m sharing my teen boy’s basement bedroom reveal! As you may already know, I’ve partnered with Raymour and Flanigan, who without them, none of this would be possible! With their help, I️ was able to create an amazing space for our boy-that frankly, I️ kinda want for myself—-you’ll see why!
When I decided to update my son’s basement bedroom for his 17th birthday, I️ thought about how he currently uses his space. He likes to create music and write songs, but he is also pretty passionate about his style: his sneakers mostly! So I️ knew that I️ wanted his room to have a laid back vibe with some cool/funky elements.
When shopping for the space I️ scoured the Raymour & Flanigan website for just the right style that I️ was looking for, they have such a wide selection of items that fit any style or budget!
From the beginning, I knew I wanted to use the chest and nightstand from the Aversa Bedroom collection, and had planned on mixing and matching it with an upholstered bed. But when we ventured into the showroom, we realized that the dresser for the bedroom set had a very low profile, and with my almost 6 ft son, it wouldn’t really suit his needs. So we got a little creative and ordered two of the Aversa chests to be placed side by side. I like how they give the effect of one large dresser.
For the bed:
Another change that happened once we visited the showroom, was my plan for an upholstered bed. Jyren loved the idea of the Aversa queen storage bed over an upholstered one. This was one of those mom-moments where I️ had to choose my battles! But it was the best decision we made because honestly, this bed is amazing!
The low profile headboard, it’s clean, modern lines, and most importantly-the storage capacity! This bed comes three different ways: without storage underneath, with 3 storage drawers on just one side, or storage on both sides! Because his room does not have a closet-we chose the option with maximum storage capacity.
The Aversa bed is a platform bed so we also ordered a bunkie board and a new Sealy Hanover Street mattress to ensure a good nights sleep.
I️ really wanted to incorporate a fun graphic rug, but here’s where I️ had to bend again for my boy. He fell in love with the Kramer shag rug– but I️ couldn’t blame him-it is seriously so soft guys-your feet just melt into it. This was also a great solid base-to break up all of the wood, between the flooring and the furniture.
One of my favorite things about Raymour and Flanigan is that they offer delivery within three days or less (2 days in our case!) and they deliver 7 days a week, so there was no waiting around for his new furniture. It also gave me an opportunity to really configure the space how I wanted, by trying out different layouts in the room.
I️ had originally planned to place the bed on the window wall, but was able to create a better space plan by centering the bed in the middle of the long room, creating zones- check it out:
He has the Dressing Zone:
He has the “Studio Zone”:
The Sleep Zone:
The Aversa bedroom set comes with two nightstand options, one that basically mimics the chest, and another that is a little more modern. We loved the profile of the 1 drawer nightstand.
The Lounge Zone:
My son fell in love with the modern Dax accent chairs. Because his room is the largest, it becomes the hub when cousins come over. They spend time making songs, playing video games or just vegging out.
We ordered two of these chairs for extra seating-one for lounging and the other for his “studio” area. They’re so chic, yet lend a relaxed vibe to the space.
And lastly, the Drop Zone: An area where he can drop his book bag, hat, and jacket when he comes in from a long day at school.
Since the room has low ceilings, I chose a modern flush-mount light fixture—love, love, love the contrasting black and white.
Between overhead lighting, wall lamps and table lamps, I used a lot of strategic lighting in this room, since we get very little natural light.
Speaking of lack of natural light, to sort-of disguise the measly little window, I️ ordered these custom “window pane” drapes, provided by Vine Street Collective. These drapes worked to create an amazing feature wall-and also gave me that fun graphic pattern that I️ craved so badly for this space!
Guys, I can’t express how happy I am with this room! I think it’s my new favorite room in the house! (and luckily he doesn’t mind me hanging out with him down here!)
I hope you enjoyed my son’s bedroom reveal! I’ll be sharing over the next couple of weeks, more details on some of the DIY projects in this space.
