The 1878: Budget Kitchen Planning

With our main focus being on the main level of #The1878byCarli, planning our kitchen is next on the list of things to do.  We’ve decided to take advantage of the Ikea Sektion kitchen system because I love the drawer options and accessories that go with them —AND its the perfect time because they are having their Kitchen Event:  15% back on a gift card and FREE Delivery (until the end of July)!!!

The kitchen and dining room are open to each other, but the main kitchen area is “U” shaped, approximately 13″x13″.

During

the state of the kitchen before the floors were refinished

The kitchen will actually have a very similar set up as our current kitchen.  I will have mostly lower cabinets and 2 tall pantry cabinets to house ALL the THINGS.

However, I have a few slight challenges in the kitchen–

Challenge 1:

  • There is a bump out on the left wall (because of an enclosed chimney).  In front of the bump out, is where the radiator is placed.  I haven’t decided if I want to eliminate that radiator since there is already one in the dining room a couple of feet away, or if I want to eliminate the one in the dining room.

Challenge 2:

  • Well this is a challenge, but also a blessing, the door to the side porch will slightly disrupt my cabinet layout, but I wouldn’t trade the side porch for the world!

Challenge 3:

  • I really, really, really wanted to try to squeeze in an stationary island in this space, but I just don’t think there will be enough room, so I’m thinking I will have to place something in here that I will be able to pull out and use or create a custom piece later down the road.

Inspiration:

There are several kitchens that I’m inspired by (Click here to check out my pinterest board), but I haven’t nailed down a plan quite yet.

I know for sure that I prefer a streamlined clutter free kitchen, and that I’ll have very few upper/wall cabinets if any at all. See below:

Which do you like better?

I’ve also toyed around with the idea of no upper cabinets, preferring a more open and airy feel. But we will see!

Hi Carli, I am sooo excited for you? I can't wait for your whole house being updated. If I had to choose which radiator to keep, I would keep the one in the dining room because the kitchen is where the heat is going to be coming from being that you cook there. Just my 2 cents.

I forgot to add, for your side door to your porch, have you thought about making it a pocket door?
