Hi friends, last week I shared my son’s bedroom refresh, and this week it’s our turn. Our bedroom is always, ALWAYS last on the list and still has a ways to go, but our bed is feeling just right after a trip to Target this past week.
This post is sponsored by Target. As always all opinions are 100% mine.
Target has some of the most amazing and stylish home items and I’ve been waiting to get my hands on some of the Luxe items available from the Casaluna line, and this was the perfect time to update our bedding for the season!
But first, let me back up real quick: We first ordered a new memory foam mattress by Room Essentials for Kyle, because believe it or not, he still, so often, sleeps in our bed. When we moved him into his own room a few months ago, we gave him a mattress that we bought at a big box store that went t my daughter’s daybed, and it was horrible, just completely awful, so whenever he would jump in our bed, and I’d tell him to go back to his own, he’d say “Mom, but your bed is sooooo comfy though!” So that was the cue that I needed to make his bed feel as comfy and cozy as ours did and that starts with a comfy mattress. I have to say the minute I opened up that mattress and placed it on his bed, I tested it out and it truly is comfortable, it is a little firm at first, but the memory foam is amazing and such a huge improvement from his previous mattress. And while I believe that our mattress is a good quality, I think the real credit should go to the cozy layers of bedding!
Now back to my bedroom refresh, as Kyle’s is a work in progress.
So first thing to note, is that we don’t actually have a bed frame at the moment. Our mattress rests on an adjustable base, and finding a bed that I love that is compatible has been a little difficult, so I’m improvising at the moment.
One of the first steps I took to freshening up my room, was to install a new curtain rod and new curtains. I love these curtains and have used them in multiple client projects, they come in a cream/gray, and also in a cream and blue. They’re a great alternative to a solid curtain, with a very light pattern. While having our bed in front of a window isn’t exactly ideal, this layout provides the best amount of space for our room. When creating this look, I always use four panels to create a backdrop, especially if there’s a narrow window, because it makes the window appear much larger. ***If you attempt this, be sure that your curtain panels extend beyond your bed and nightstands, it gives it a much more substantial look and feel.
How I Create a Perfectly Layered and Cozy Bed
What you’ll need:
- A lumbar pillow
- Two Euro pillows
- And a Soft Knit blanket for texture
- Good Quality Sheets:
- Down or Down Alternative Bed Pillows:
- Down or Down Alternative Comforter
- A Quilt (I like to skip the Duvet, because why fight when a quilt serves the same purpose without the hassle)
How to make your bed
Sheets
- I know a lot of people like to skip the top sheet, but for me it’s a MUST, I only skip them on kids beds, because they always end up on the floor, ugh!
- I purchased these sheets in Cream, and they’re perfection. Put your sheets on the bed, if you’re not skipping the top sheet and it has a decorative detail, put it on the bed right side down, so the decorative detail shows when you fold it over.
- Tuck that top sheet under your mattress and don’t forget those hospital corners at the bottom of the bed-lol
- A LITTLE SIDE STORY: My grandmother was a housekeeper, and when I was a little girl and stayed with her, she would bring me with her and show me how to make the perfect bed, I think that’s why I tend to take such great pride in and enjoy making beds to this day.
Pillows
Next add your pillows. Now, I have to say, when it comes to my bed pillows I’m a bit of a snob. I need them to be firm/full, because my husband murders pillow—folds them, crushes them and just completely messes them up, so they have to be able to hold up to that abuse. And I think I made a great choice with the Down alternative Casaluna Pillows.
Down Comforter
The photos are a little out of order, but, bear with me. Spread your down blanket/comforter over your top sheet. I really, really wanted to try out the Casaluna Down Comforter, but we got a new down comforter around this time last year, so I skipped the new one—but it looked so soft and cozy, they also sell a lightweight Down alternative one that looked equally as soft, and it’s a great value at less than $100!
Whichever you choose, don’t skip this step, down and down alternative comforters are TRULY WHAT MAKE THE BED–Fold it back about a 1/4 of the way.
Quilt
Now add your quilt, and pull it up to just cover your down blanket.
Knit Blanket
Next, let’s bring on the texture! Add your knit blanket. Fold it the long way and then lay it over the quilt loosely. Ruffle it up a bit, so it’s not too structured-because remember we’re going for that carefree, cozy layered bed look.
Throw Pillows:
I chose these amazing King Euro pillows by Casaluna with removable covers, and to be honest, I never knew a King Euro pillow was a thing, but I LOVE them! They’re so soft, but still substantial enough to give our bed some presence. I
I placed them up against the headboard, then placed my bed pillows in front of them. After that I layered a neutral long lumbar pillow in front. This pillow is really beautiful and I love how it adds texture to the top of the bed.
Last but not least, I added my DIY bench to the end of the bed. It’s a really great addition to our bedroom and I think it helps to complete the look.
And there you have it, friends! A perfectly Cozy and Layered Bed
When you layer all of these items on a bed you will have the most wonderful sleep! The beauty of a layered bed is not just that it’s beautiful, I think it’s the fact that you can peel things down or pull them up depending on your personal comfort. The weight of all those layers, snugly layers, just makes it feel so welcoming.

Now, I need to know, are you a top sheet person too?
Your bed looks lovely, but most of those layers and pillows would end up on the floor if that was our bed.
I buy nice sheets in a floral pattern and cover the top sheet with a light weight comforter in a solid color duvet cover. I add four bed pillows in pillowcases and call it done.
We both run hot so have no need for more than the comforter over the top sheet – and many nights the comforter ends up scrunched up in the middle of the bed or on the floor. I should probably invest in a bench for the foot of the bed to keep the comforter off the floor.
And yes – definitely Team Top Sheet – it’s sometimes the only thing covering me at night.

My husband hates the layers, but I sleep like a baby under them all even in summer, haha.

Yes! 🙂
So beautiful and cozy! Where did you get your bed frame from? Our master bedroom is more on the small size and have windows on every wall. Trying to find a frame that isn’t huge has been a smidge challenging. Love what you did with your curtains never would have thought of extending it like that.

Thanks so much Natalie! Here’s a link to the bed: https://rstyle.me/+faUS2xyjsuAiZGAyobuQyw, it has a pretty low profile so it works well in front of windows☺️.
The link goes to a Bowdoin Upholstered Wingback Platform Bed. Is that the same bed?

Hi Natalie, I had to look again, I forgot, in this post this was a DIY situation, lol. I shortly upgraded to the the one on the link. In this post it’s just our adjustable base bed, with wood behind to act like a headboard.
I am wondering what size bed this is !?

It’s a queen 🙂
Looks so inviting!! What color paint is on your walls?

Thank you! My walls are Sculptor Clay by Behr
Is the quilt cream like the sheets or white ? If so, can you please explain the logic. I think it looks amazing and makes it “pop” a bit but was wondering if that was the reason why or if it was something else. Cream on cream may be to similar.

Hi Bree, the Quilt is actually described as white, but it’s not a bright white, more like off-white in my opinion. I like to do a tone on tone with subtle variances, I think it helps to add a little depth.
Your bedroom decor is soo beautiful and serene!!
