It’s no big surprise that fall is my favorite season, but showcasing that on my front porch can add up! Today I’m sharing a few steps to create a fab fall front porch without breaking the bank.
Step 1//Start with a rug (s)
Since layering floor mats is so trendy right now, I used an outdoor rug from Rugs USA first, and then layered a door mat on top. Finding good layering rugs can be tricky, so I explored Rugs USA’s great selection of outdoor rugs to find the perfect size for layering.
Step 2//Plants/Planters
I like to use two large planters to flank the door, usually with ferns to make the most of them before they die–I’ve had these ferns since early May, so I wasn’t about to let them go too easily. Next, I fill in a few smaller ones with seasonal plants/florals like mums.
Step 3// Add in the Pumpkins
This year I invested in 8 pumpkins total: 2 specialty pumpkins, 2 standard large pumpkins, and then 4 sugar pumpkins. I had actually planned on painting the orange pumpkins, and then when I tested everything out, it felt pretty magical as it was—so I kept them natural.
This, my friends, is a good lesson in being flexible.

Step 4// Ambiance
I added in some small and large lanterns with battery operated pillar candles to add some ambiance at night. I love that they have an option to be on a timer, so they automatically turn on at dusk. When we had our siding done, we changed out our sconces to these and used these light bulbs for a vintage look.
Step 5// The Door
Lastly, add a festive wreath! I opted for live mums in a hanging basket that I found while thrifting—I love how it came out.
Hi Carli! Happy fall. I love how you made the process so simple for me and my daughter to do! The steps are great, and could be applied to any season.
Thank you for this great tutorial!
