DIY Disco Ball Hanging Planter (from a Tree Topper)

During a recent Walmart run, I found a disco ball tree topper and had a bunch lightbulb moment—why not turn it into a funky diy disco ball hanging planter for my son’s retro cool bedroom?

Tools Needed:

• Sharp knife (to remove mirror pieces)
• 8” Disco Ball Tree Topper
• Drill and drill bit (for making holes)
• Ribbon (I used ribbon but you could use a chain, or rope)
• Hot glue gun and glue sticks
• Container (to fit inside the disco ball for the plant-I used a fast food tub)
• IKEA wooden shelf bracket (or any sturdy hook for hanging)

Here’s how I did it:

Perfect Fit: The tree topper had an open top, which worked perfectly for it to be used as a planter

Prepping for Hanging: To hang it, I chose three equidistant spots around the disco ball, counted four rows down, and used a sharp knife to pluck off the mirror pieces. Then, I drilled holes through the styrofoam ball.

Securing the Ribbon: I threaded the ribbon through the holes, folded it over, and hot glued it in place for extra security.

Final Touch: I hung it from an IKEA wooden shelf bracket that I already had on hand. This would help fill a space on his gallery wall and ensured that the sun would catch it at a certain time of day. I drilled a larger hole through the top screw hole of the shelf and fed the three ribbons through.

Next I tied the three ribbons in a knot to hold it in place, and now it’s adding some disco sparkle and retro vibes to the room!

I placed a water-grown pothos plant that I’ve been rooting for a while inside a container that fit snugly inside the disco ball.

This easy DIY brought some serious personality to my son’s space, turning a holiday decoration into year-round decor with a touch of retro flair. Can’t wait to share more updates on my son’s space.
