Y’all, I’m all about bringing those warm, cozy vibes right to my front door! There’s something special about decorating the porch for the season – it sets the tone for your home and welcomes everyone with a big, autumnal hug. This year, I decided to use either what I already had on hand or items from my yard which resulted in a beautiful DIY dried hydrangea basket, and I’m so excited to show you how easy it is to create your own.
Why a Front Door Basket?
Wreaths are always a go-to for front doors, but there’s something a bit unexpected and unique about a basket filled with seasonal flowers. A basket feels like a rustic, farmhouse-style nod to the harvest season, and it’s so versatile. You can change it up throughout the year – think holiday greenery for winter or fresh flowers in the spring!
For fall, dried hydrangeas are the perfect choice. They have that muted, earthy tone that just screams cozy, and they hold up beautifully, even if you’re in an area where fall weather can be unpredictable.

- A hanging basket (I opted for a woven one to add a bit of texture)
- Dried hydrangeas (I used soft blues, muted purples, and warm greens)

Step 1: Choose Your Basket
You want something that will hang nicely on your front door, so choose a flat-back basket that can easily rest against the door without sticking out too far. I found a beautiful woven one at a thrift store years ago, but I was gifted one last year from Ballard and decided to use that one again this year. This basket brings in some cozy texture, and I love the contrasting leather straps–but any basket style works as long as it’s sturdy.
Step 2: Prep the Hydrangeas
I went with dried hydrangeas because their colors are perfect for fall, and they’re long-lasting. You can either dry your own as I did or find pre-dried ones at a craft store. I used a mix of my Quick Fire hydrangeas and my Little quick Fire Hydrangeas and later decided to incorporate a few sprigs of autumn joy stonecrop for a beautiful contrast for a rich, earthy palette.
Trim the stems to fit your basket, keeping in mind that you’ll want the blooms to sit just above the top of the basket for a full, layered look. I also added some faux stems from Dollar Tree that I never used last year, and they worked great as a filler and to a spiller (to spill over the sides and give the basket more interest).
Step 3: Arrange the Flowers
You can place a piece of floral foam at the bottom of the basket to keep the hydrangeas secure, or use floral wire to tie the stems together, or be like me and just stuff them in there. Start by placing the largest blooms in the back and work your way forward with smaller ones. Layer them to create a full, lush look, and feel free to play around with the arrangement until you’re happy with it. Remember, the beauty of this project is that it doesn’t have to be perfect – a little wildness adds to the charm!
Step 4: Hang it on Your Front Door
Once you’re happy with your arrangement, it’s time to hang the basket! I have a hook screwed into my door, but you could also use a pretty ribbon for extra detail. Step back and take in the transformation – instant fall magic!
Creating this front door basket and styling my porch for fall was such a fun way to welcome the new season. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of coming home to a cozy, inviting porch after a crisp fall day. 🍂
