After having multiple failed deliveries to our house, I knew I needed to add an address sign closer to the street. But I didn’t want anything basic, I wanted an address sign post that matched the character of our home—something classic, thoughtful and something that increased our curb appeal.

When we had some landscaping cleanup done here in early fall, we removed a tree from the corner of our driveway. It actually made it hard to spot our driveway from the street—with two trees flanking it—and even harder to see cars when pulling out. So I knew this would be the perfect spot to mark our house and driveway without creating another obstruction.

If you’ve been here for a while, you know I’m not new to DIY address signs—I even made one at the Hosta House from an old garden bed. But this time around, I wanted something that felt a little more elevated.
While searching for inspiration online I found this image, and had very good intentions of building this sign post . . .

But in my search for materials, I came across this:

And let’s be honest—I’m 45 and deep in my work smarter, not harder era… so I ordered this post and Frankensteined my address post together from pieces I found online.
What I Used
- Post spike (we could have used concrete, but this was way easier)
- 4″x4″x4′ pressure-treated wood (plus a small piece for hammering the spike into the ground)
- Address sign post
- Reflective address sign
- Solar post lantern
- Shims
- 2.5″ exterior wood screws

How We Did It (Super Simple)
-
Drove the post stake into the ground (and yes—definitely check your dig-safe guidelines before you start).
- Position the stake
Set it where you want your post. - Hammer it in
Use a scrap wood block + sledgehammer or mallet depending on how hard your soil is. - Check level as you go (we may or may not have eyeballed it, which is why we used shims)
- Insert your 4×4
Slide it into the bracket. - Secure it
Screw or bolt it in place.
- Position the stake

Using an oscillating tool, we cut the base of the address post slighlty larger to fit over the top of the post spike

Then we slipped the address post over the 4×4. You can further secure it if you want, but ours fit pretty snugly

Next we attached the bracket that comes with the post. And added the reflective number sign according to directions (it comes with a ton of adhesive numbers).

And lastly, we attached the solar lantern on top with the provided flange and screws.
No wiring. No digging trenches. No concrete. Just layering a few simple pieces.
This Worked Perfectly Because:
- The solar light charges during the day and lights up nicely at night
- The reflective sign makes the address easy to see from the street
- Using separate pieces gave me the exact look I wanted.
Cost Breakdown (Approx.)
- Post stake: $40
- 4×4: $16
- Address post: $86
- Solar lantern: $60
- Reflective sign: $25
Total: about $250 total
(way less than custom or wired options)
The Result

It ended up being exactly what I was looking for—without compromising or overcomplicating it.
Now I just need to add a little more landscaping. 🌿

Genius! (As usual, Carli) It looks gorgeous.
Very clever! It looks stunning
