My DIY Walk-In Closet with The Home Depot

Hi Friends!  If you’ve been following along on Instagram, you may have been anticipating this reveal.

I’m so happy to share that I’ve partnered with Home Depot to turn a small spare room into a master walk in closet.  This project has been a few months in the making, and I honestly couldn’t have imagined a more perfect closet/dressing room for this space.  To see how I accomplished this custom look, visit The Home Depot Blog here.

With no existing closet in our master bedroom, and a small spare room not being used to its full potential, we knew there had to be a better use for the space. The spare room, adjacent to our bedroom was currently being used as a bedroom for our 4 year old (a bedroom he never, ever slept in!)

With this spare room being adjacent to our bedroom, we knew it would be a perfect walk-in closet to accompany our master bedroom.

Planning:

I created a quick sketch to help me visualize what I wanted to do. It was also helpful when visiting Home Depot as a reminder of what items I needed to buy to make this thing happen.

With my plans in place, it was time to open up the wall!

Opening up the wall

We opened up the wall and we literally had a hallelujah moment:  MORE SPACE AND MORE NATURAL LIGHT what more could I ask for?

Take a look below to see how my plan came to life (and then some!)

We love that we had space to create this window benchWoven Shade //  Rug Runner
Utility Cabinet // Rug Runner //  Pendant Light // Cabinet Pull // Cabinet Knobs // Under bed Storage Containers

Storage on top of storage, on top of storage!

I pretty much knew from the beginning that I wanted to use Hampton Bay’s unfinished utility cabinets in this space (I’m constantly using them in projects, because they provide such functional storage!)

Using these cabinets allowed me to customize his and her closets in a sort of galley style, and the closed cabinet storage is a win-win since the closet is open to the bedroom with no door, it’s perfect for hiding any clutter that may arise.

Along with the utility cabinets, I was able to build a shelf tower to the right of the cabinet  to hold bins and crates, and then even more storage by way of 2 long shelves above both cabinets, which is perfect for seasonal items.

I painted the walls and cabinets LeLuxe blue by Behr Paint in Satin, don’t you just love the way the brass plays off of the moody blue color?

I am so happy with the results of this closet makeover, and am so grateful to The Home Depot for partnering with me on this project.  Be sure to visit The Home Depot Blog for more details about this project.  You can also visit my “Master Closet” highlight for a sneak peak behind the scenes.

Did you cut the window sil to have the closet but up against the window casing? I am having that dilemma and think cutting it is the only solution.

Hi Lindsay, I actually just butted it right about against the sill, and then installed the shiplap on the side of the cabinet around it. However, I think if I were to do something like this again, I’d probably just cut the sil to fit.
