After sharing my office reveal, I realized there was still one little detail I hadn’t quite finished—window treatments. The space felt good, but it needed a little softness and something to make it feel more complete.
I wanted privacy without losing the light… and these affordable café curtains ended up being exactly the answer. They give just enough coverage without closing the space off.
Now everything feels softer, more finished, and a little more intentional… without blocking all that natural light, which was non-negotiable for me here.
But I’ll be honest, this isn’t a straight-out-of-the-package situation. You do have to zhuzh them a bit. Steam them, train the folds, use proper hardware, and hang them at the right height so they just kiss the sill. That’s the difference between “just hung” and actually styled.
The Curtains + Hardware
For this space, I wanted something light, simple, and slightly tailored. Café curtains felt like the perfect fit—just enough coverage to add softness and privacy, while still letting in plenty of daylight.
I paired them with a curtain rod and rings set that feel a little more elevated than your standard set. Nothing overly fancy, but sturdy, well-finished, and proportionate to the window, and the best part is that the rings fit perfectly on the rod, (which is oddly hard to find).
That combination alone made a big difference.
Because the truth is—when you’re working with budget-friendly curtains, the hardware does a lot of the heavy lifting.
How to Tweak Affordable Café Curtains So They Look Custom
If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that you don’t need expensive materials to get a beautiful result—you just need to zhuzh them a little.
Here are a few things I’ve learned along the way:
1. Start with the better hardware
This is the easiest upgrade you can make. A solid rod, properly sized rings, and clean finishes instantly elevate the look. Flimsy hardware will make even the nicest curtains feel cheap, so in this space I felt it was worth the investment.
2. Hang them at the right height
With café curtains, placement really does matter. I like to hang mine slightly above the midpoint of the window instead of right in the center. It helps elongate the space and makes it feel more intentional.
For reference, the center of my window is around 33.5″, but I ordered 36″ curtains. I didn’t feel like hemming them, lol. That extra length, combined with pin hook placement, gives you a little flexibility to adjust the height.
I like the bottom to just kiss the windowsill. Not puddle, not float. Just barely touch.
Hardware Installation
Installation was pretty straightforward. The finial and bracket screw right into the window casing, and I love that they include both inside and outside mount hardware. Plus plenty of rings, which is always a win.
Once the brackets are in, slide the rod through and tighten the set screw to hold everything in place.
I also make sure the bottom of the curtains sits just slightly above the windowsill, so order your curtain length accordingly.
For my windows, the center point is at 33.5″, but I ordered 36″ curtains. A little math (or in my case, eyeballing) may be necessary, but that extra length—along with pin hook placement—gives you some flexibility to get the placement just right.
Where you place your pin hooks vertically makes a big difference. I like to set mine so just the ring shows, but none of the hook—you get that clean, tailored look without any hardware peeking through.
This means for my particular curtains, pins and rings, that the top of the pin is about a half inch from the top edge of the curtain—it took some playing around at different heights for me to get the right look, but this is where it felt right. And it instantly makes them feel more high-end while still feeling a little relaxed.
3. Steam and train the folds
Now this is the part most people don’t think about—and where the magic really happens.

Once they’re hung, take a minute to gently shape the folds with your hands, this is the difference a 30-second tweak makes. On the right, I pushed the folds in and grouped the pleats together to “train” the fabric. On the left, they’re just hung as-is—no shaping at all.
This helps the fabric hang better, look cleaner, and feel more intentional overall.
Next group the pleats, then steam them in place to help “train” the folds.
The Final Look
What I love most is how they soften the room without overwhelming it. They feel light, a little tailored, and just finished enough. And the fact that they were affordable makes it even better. It’s one of those little reminders that it’s not about spending more, it’s about styling things in a more thoughtful way.
