DIY Wall Sconce

Friends! I had to get a little crafty this weekend as I was working to wrap up the desk area in the attic. I found this wall sconce (below) online and I thought it was perfect for the vibe I was going for—but I didn’t want to wait for shipping and I figured I could easily DIY it without having to worry about wiring it thanks to this Magic Light Trick.

So I ran to Walmart and picked up this and the rest of the items I already had on hand.  I used:

Here’s what to do:

Cut the belt to size (12″)  and drill a hole 1/2″ from each end.

Next, drill holes 1 5/8″ from the bottom of each side of the cup and attach the belt creating a loop with small screws.

Next, add Command strips to attach the puck light to the bottom of the cup.

Stain your wood dowels to your liking.  I layered Minwax Penetrating Wood Stain in Special Walnut with Classic Gray.

For the base, aka jar candle lid, I removed the rubber flange and then spray painted it black.

Using a small drill bit, pre-drill a hole in the dowel and in the center of the wood disk, and screw them together with a wood screw.  Also screw two holes on each side of the disk (candle jar lid) to attach it to the wall.

I hung my little cup lantern onto the dowel and adjusted it as needed.  After looking at it for a bit, I decided that I liked the idea of the loop being pinched right below the dowel, so I added some black electrical tape to hold it in place.
